My Opinion About Tinnitus Retraining Therapy by John Richmond
The American Tinnitus Association estimates that more than fifty million Americans experience tinnitus to some degree, with approximately twelve million having symptoms bad enough to search for a medical solution.
Tinnitus is typically described as some type of ringing, buzzing or chirping sound in the ears. It can come and go or it can be constant. When you’re trying to work or do any kind of mental activity it can make it difficult to concentrate on the task at hand. It can also make sleeping difficult leaving you tired and cranky the next day. Numerous types of treatment for tinnitus are available. One treatment is called tinnitus retraining therapy or TRT.

Also referred to as tinnitus habituation therapy, TRT is a treatment alternative founded on the theories of a medical researcher named Pawel J. Jastreboff, Ph. D. The aim of this type of therapy isn’t to cure tinnitus, but to re-train the areas of the brain involved in processing the tinnitus signals. TRT blends low-level, constant background sounds combined with intensive counseling. The user enriches his or her background sound for a minimum of eight hours a day typically with an in the ear sound device. These two therapies combined assist individuals in becoming oblivious of the sounds of their tinnitus. Many who have experienced tinnitus have retrained themselves to ignore it. It just becomes a part of our lives. Others however can’t find a way to cope with it and find themselves seeking a medical solution. I was one of them.
TRT can take as long as 12 to 24 months before the desired improvement is noticed. And frequently the patient doesn’t respond to the therapy and quits out of frustration.
Therefore, I do not recommend that anyone attempt tinnitus retraining therapy except as a possible last resort for those with extreme symptoms. I do however recommend that you take a look at a website called EndYourTinnitus.com for some very interesting information about a natural cure for this condition.
