What Is The Cause Of Tinnitus?
Tinnitus occurs when there is damage to the microscopic endings of the nerve of hearing in the inner ear. These nerve endings are critical for good hearing, and trauma to them brings on hearing loss and frequently tinnitus. As we grow older most of us will experience a certain amount of damage to the hearing nerve. All of us, regardless of age can experience these life altering conditions when exposed repeatedly to loud noise.
Most of us take our good hearing for granted and think that only the elderly need to worry about losing it. But, when you consider that over 30 million people in the U.S. alone have some form of hearing loss and the average age of hearing aid wearers continues to get lower, it becomes clear that we should all be paying attention.

Exposure to loud noise is the main cause of tinnitus. Playing music too loud, working in a noisy environment, gunfire, frequent use of power tools like chain saws and leaf blowers are just a few of the things that we can avoid to prevent damage to our hearing. All of the above can be alleviated by simply useing earplugs or earmuffs designed to block the noise.
Certain drugs can aggravate tinnitus. High doses of aspirin can make tinnitus worse. Caffeine can too by constricting blood flow to the ear. Nicotine should be avoided, so if you smoke or use any product containing nicotine, consider quitting.
Meniere’s disease, a disease that has something to do with fluid in canals of the inner ear, can be a cause of tinnitus. It is not known what causes Meniere’s disease but it is in all probability an abnormality in the way the fluid of the inner ear is regulated.
Impacted wax, ear infection, TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and others are conditions that tinnitus can actually be a symptom of.
Finding the cause of tinnitus can be simple or may necessitate comprehensive diagnostic testing. Much of the time, a cause is never really determined which can be baffling for tinnitus sufferers and their doctors.
